Internal audit

An internal audit is an organization's own planned review of whether its management system or controls conform to its requirements and work as intended.

ISO 27001 clause 9.2 requires internal audits of the information security management system at planned intervals, by people who do not audit their own work. Findings feed corrective action and management review.

Internal audits do not replace the external audit, but they find problems before it does.
